Grottammare Village
Grottammare, the pearl of the Adriatic, is a tourist resort on the Riviera delle Palme celebrated for more than three centuries for the beauty of the landscape, for the evocative atmospheres of peace and serenity, for the rich historical and cultural memories it jealously preserves and preserves like a casket. The hospitality, the meticulous care of its architectural heritage and a growth model that has harmoniously reconciled urban progress and the conscientious respect for nature and the sea, have allowed Grottammare to receive important awards, among which the Blue Flag of Europe, the Three Sails in the Blue Guide of Legambiente published by the Italian Touring Club and the diploma of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy for the Old Incasato. A pleasant walk allows you to reach Grottammare alta, the original medieval village overlooking the sea, gathered on the edge of a hill, with rustic houses and small streets, where the scent of orange groves expands. Along the path that leads to it is the seventeenth-century villa of Cardinal Decio Azzolino, where Cristina of Sweden stayed. Following the conquest of the city in 1525 by the pirate Ulcinj, the village was fortified with walls, doors and a tower called the battle. Currently it houses many of the works of the native wind sculptor, one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century, Pericle Fazzini. In the 16th century Church of Sant'Agostino there is a Madonna della Misericordia by Vincenzo Pagani (1577). In the nearby Piazzetta Peretti you can enjoy an exceptional view from the balcony porch of the building that houses the historic Orange Theater, near which is the Clock Tower. Worth a visit is the noble Church of Santa Lucia (1597) built by Camilla Peretti in memory of her brother Sixtus V Felice Peretti who became pope. The Sistine Museum set up in the Church of San Giovanni Battista is dedicated to the same. On the hill overlooking the village there are the remains of a fortress built in the IX-X centuries.
